Spain 6 – Italy 4

PREVIA

Spain defeated Italy by 4 runs to 6 in the European Baseball Championship. This result equalizes the top of B: Great Britain, France and Spain. The Italians were favorites, just as Netherlands and Spain, to win the tournament and go on to the Olympic Games.

The match started with a ceremonial 1st pitch by Hamilton Richardson who has been awarded as World’s Best Baseball Player twice and Best European Baseball Player on eleven occasions, apart from being general manager for Netherlands and for Spain.

The emotions were present during the whole match, though Spain was ahead on the scoreboard during the whole time. In the 3rd inning Daniel Figueroa scored and he achieved 3 hits, an Run Batted In (RBI) and 3 scores, results that speak for themselves. Daniel Martínez, José Cruz and Daniel Freire helped out with the good job, with 2 hits each.

The match arrived at the final ending with a minimum advantage for Spain. In its turn on offence, the team scored again but a difference of only 2 scores wasn’t decisive.

Italy did try but the Spanish pitcher defended the result of a great night for the 3 men that went on the mound: Manuel Olivera, starting and winning pitcher, Rhiner Cruz and Fernándo Gutierrez.
