Spain wins and gets the bronze medal Spain defeated Sweden, 8 to 5, in the European Baseball Championship, that finished Sunday the 16th of September in Barcelona, Spain. The Spanish team, that played to win the 3rd overall position in the tournament, did not start well and, with Eric González on the mound, allowed a 2-0 in the 1st inning. With the score board showing 2-0 the reaction of the Spanish pitcher wasn’t delayed and the team, coached by Jake Molina, with 4 scores in the following 4 turns at bat got ahead. Sweden reacted again with 2 entries in home, in the 5th inning, which equalized the game to 4. Again, in the 6th inning, the Spanish team got an advantage, leaving the result 4 to 7, thanks to 7 hits by Spain. Spain’s 3 scores made the Swedish coach change the pitcher. Replacing starting pitcher Nicklas Melin, Johan Tisell defended the result until the 8th inning, when a hit by Daniel Martínez allowed Daniel Figueroa get home, scoring the 8th run for Spain (4-8). Sweden, in the match’s last inning had, with the scoreboard showing 5-8, a position to force the tie. With men on 1st and 2nd base and no out, a double elimination of the Spanish defense aborted the Swedes possibilities and the team ended up in an overall 6th position. Remigio Leal, the Spanish pitcher, replacing Eric González, was the winning pitcher while the Swedish starting pitcher Nicklas Melin was the loser. |
